Is the Extended Tummy Tuck Technique Right for You? By James E. Murphy, MD on October 21, 2016

A sculpted, flat abdomenAfter extreme weight loss, loose skin may hang from the abdomen, the back, and flank areas. This can leave many who have worked so hard to achieve their weight goals unhappy with their appearance. There are a variety of tummy tuck techniques to eliminate stubborn fat and loose skin, helping patients achieve a sculpted, contoured abdomen. Those who wish to improve the appearance of the abdomen, flank areas, and back often benefit from an extended tummy tuck.

During patient consultations, Dr. James E. Murphy evaluates patients to determine if the extended tummy tuck technique is right for their needs. Contact our Reno, NV practice to find out if the extended tummy tuck technique is right for you.

The Extended Tummy Tuck Procedure

The extended tummy tuck technique uses the methods of a traditional tummy tuck with the addition of back and flank sculpting. During the extended tummy tuck procedure, an incision is made along the length of the abdomen, extending to the back of the hips. The underlying muscles and tissues are tightened, along with any loose skin along the abdomen, flanks, and back. Once the desired contours are achieved, the incisions are sutured closed.

The extended tummy tuck procedure may require an overnight stay in the hospital or clinic where the procedure was performed.

Recovery after an Extended Tummy Tuck

The extended tummy tuck is an involved surgical procedure affecting the full torso. Accordingly, significant time is required for recovery. Patients will need help around the house and with daily activities, like preparing food and caring for children, and should arrange for a friend or family member to stay with them for a few days to a week after surgery.

During the first few days after surgery, patients should expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain medication will be prescribed to help alleviate pain as the body heals. Applying clean ice packs can also help alleviate pain and reduce swelling.

Strenuous activity as well as bending and lifting should be avoided to prevent complications. Most patients are sufficiently recovered after two weeks and may return to work but should stick to light activity and avoid strenuous activity until approved by their surgeon. Most patients are fully recovered after six weeks but may not see the full results of the extended tummy tuck procedure for several months.

Risks and Side Effects of Extended Tummy Tuck Surgery

As with any surgery, there are some potential risks and side effects that may occur after surgery. For many, the benefits of extended tummy tuck surgery far outweigh the potential risks and side effects. These possible risks and side effects include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Skin numbness
  • Nerve damage
  • Blood clots in the legs
